Our Current Initiatives
Taos Housing Partnership (THP)’s work is guided by their 3-year Recommended Housing Roadmap. The roadmap provides a historical overview of community dialogue that began in November 2021, details from a completed needs assessment, and a comprehensive framework of strategies and activities moving forward.
The Roadmap was formally adopted by the THP Board of Directors, in partnership with community leaders and elected officials from the Town of Taos and Taos County who have been part of this visionary team since 2022.
The details of how Taos Housing Partnership (THP) plans to administer affordable housing programing can be found in their Administrative Manual. These administrative procedures provide a framework so that THP, or its agents, can work with local governments, private development partners, homeowners, lenders, title companies, and all interested parties for the creation of affordable housing within the THP service area.
The Administrative Manual was formally adopted by the THP Board of Directors in 2024.
Homebuyer Education
By starting a Homebuyer Education program, THP will have the ability to help local residents interested in homeownership begin the process of savings, credit repair, and budgeting habits, in order to qualify for the best mortgage products in 2024, and beyond.
Below-Market Housing Strategies
We’re working with community leaders, developers, and local governments to make below-market housing a tangible reality for our community. As of 2024 those projects include:
Chamisa Verde
Questa
Mortgage Assistance Programs
In 2024, we are identifying ways to use existing mortgage products by the Mortgage Finance Authority and others to develop a more flexible local Second Mortgage Program through development processes and capitalizing a fund.
Housing Policy and Advocacy
Policy is important. In an effort to move the needle on affordable and accessible housing in Taos, the team at THP are actively participating in special working groups with the Town and County governments to review the local Land Use Codes, short-term rental policies, and future development plans.
THP also hosts a monthly Housing Advocacy & Learning Group on the third Tuesday of the month at the UNM-Taos HIVE. Check out our events page for upcoming meetings.
Pathways to Preservation
Preserving our community’s existing rental units is critical to our affordable housing strategy. Currently, we have taken steps to start building a database of properties that are at risk of preservation and potential strategies for preserving these properties.
Community Education
We’re always looking for ways to provide approachable information on the detailed topics surrounding affordable housing. We host regular community conversations that give opportunity to community members, nonprofit partners, and elected officials to dive deeper and learn together while collaborating on creative solutions that meet our community’s unique needs.
